A new trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was released last Thursday, and it is epic.
For those unfamiliar with the story, Rogue One is about the group of rebels who steal the plans for the Death Star. It all takes place before the first film in the Star Wars series, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The rebel group is led by Jyn Erso, played by Felicity Jones, who appears to be a criminal recruited by the Rebellion.
This new trailer gives us a glance into Jyn’s tragic background. Her father was taken from her at a young age and forced to work on the Death Star. Now Jyn and her band of warriors must find her father and stop the Empire. Familiar sets and characters from the original films can also be seen in the trailer. Mon Mothma is beginning to gather Rebel forces while Darth Vader himself is cutting them down. X-Wings fly into battle and Storm Troopers shoot aimlessly at enemies.
The most impressive element to come from this trailer is the visual style of the film. The camera movements are incredibly dynamic and the shots are just beautiful. At fifty nine seconds in we get a glance at the ultra-realistic Death Star peering through the clouds. Long gone are the models built for the original trilogy. The color of the film has a slight blue hue to it, setting the mood for this oppressed galaxy on the brink of war. The camera tracks, pans and shakes, bringing us close to the characters and letting us experience their battles firsthand.
Last December the world was introduced to Rey in Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens. She immediately became a fan favorite because of her strength, smarts, and ability to fly just about any star ship. We were given the awesome feminist character we sorely needed, and Jyn continues (or rather begins) this legacy. We can only hope that the next films in the series introduce us to worthy female characters in a universe previously dominated by men.
And we can only hope that Rogue One delivers us another incredible story from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
