Disney’s Moana continues the trend of the empowered princess

For the third episode of Trailer Talk, Laura Alexander and I cover the new Disney film Moana. In the first half of this podcast we talk about the film before we have seen it, referencing trailers and background knowledge. We return for the second half after we’ve seen the film and give our (spoiler-free) reviews.

Laura and I grew up watching Disney films and aspired to be like their beautiful princesses. This new princess gives young girls the role model they need. Moana is strong, fearless, smart and, most importantly, not defined by any of the men in her life.

Topics discussed in this Trailer Talk include cultural issues addressed in the film, the music by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, the high ratings and profits the film has received and the voice actors behind the lovable characters Moana (newcomer Auli’i Cravalho) and Maui (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson).
